Intended Audience: Upper-level graduate students/researchers who intend to incorporate modeling into their workflow
Course Overview: This course is designed to introduce the concepts and theories of individual-based ecology and modeling for research. Students can expect to develop a strong foundation in model development, and how to take an idea from conceptualization through implementation into software. The topics covered will include:
• Describing how individual-based models differ from more traditional ecological models and when they are more appropriate to use.
• Conceptual modeling
• Designing models for research questions
• Implementing models in software
• How to analyze models and conduct simulation experiments to solve scientific questions.
Course Format: Includes lectures, interactive computer exercises, and group exercises.
